Best audio book ulysses8/13/2023 He is in my opinion the most fully formed character in anything I have ever read. The heart of the book belongs to Leopold Bloom, who is introduced in the fourth chapter. Save these chapters for later when you have grown used to Joyce's Modus operandi Its pretty obvious that most readers drop out in the third chapter, which is basically Stephen walking along the beach, taking a piss, visiting his aunt and engaging in almost unreadable mental wankery. He is a deeply educated and troubled young man who in a way revels in his intellect and depression. These are from the perspective of Stephen Dedalus as he goes about his morning. The best tip for a first time reader is to skip the first three chapters. Secondly and most importantly, Don't feel compelled to read it in the assigned orders. At its very core Ulysses is a story of a man wandering around a city thinking about the fact that his wife is cheating on him at home. Further there is no need to have a deep knowledge of Irish History or the Geography of Dublin City. To that end I'd like to offer some advice for anyone who wants to attempt it.įirstly, don't be intimidated by it! There really is no need to read the Odyssey. I'd really love for everybody to read this book, it really is something else. Ulysses comes up here a lot and /r/books seems evenly split between those who love it and does who hate it or haven't read it.
